Blocks

Blocks are areas of content that you can place in your site. 

Content creators cannot manage blocks by default, only administrators can.

Add a block and place it in a region

  1. If Drupal 6: Go to Site building -> Blocks
    If Drupal 7: Go to Structure -> Blocks
  2. You will see the list of all the blocks that you already have. You can move these around within regions and in between regions as well
  3. Click on Add Block link at the top to create a new Block
  4. Type in the Block Title. This is the title you want the users to see and is optional
  5. Type in the Block Description. This is what you will see as an admin in the Blocks listing page. This helps you identify the blocks.
  6. Type in the Content
  7. If Drupal 7: Select the Region for SF State Theme: An Omega Subtheme (default theme)
    • Content will place the Block in the middle portion like pages
    • Branding will place the Block in the promobox area at the banner image
    • Sidebar First will place the block on the left hand menu region
    • Sidebar Second will place the block in the right hand sidebar region 
  8. Save the Block
  9. You will be back on the Blocks overview listing page
  10. Identify the Block using its description.
  11. Move it suitable regions and/or to re-order within a region.
    If Drupal 6: You will have the following Regions
    • Content will place the Block in the middle portion like pages
    • Promobox will place the Block in the promobox area at the banner image
    • Left Sidebar will place the block on the left hand menu region
    • Right Sidebar will place the block in the right hand sidebar region 
    • Top Content will place the Block in the middle portion like pages but above the Page content
  12. Click on the Save Blocks button at the bottom of the screen.

 

Display blocks dynamically

This can be done either while adding a block or by editing an existing block. Basically you have to be in the Configure mode.

  1. If Drupal 6: You will see
    • Role specific visibility settings
      • You can select which roles can see the block
    • Page specific visibility settings
      • You can type in which pages the block should show or which pages it shouldn't show
      • Type in one page per line using either node/[node-number] format or using the URL alias of the page (content/new-page)
  2. If Drupal 7: You will see these at the bottom of the screen
    • Pages: Same as Page specific visibility settings in Drupal 6
    • Roles: Same as Role specific visibility settings in Drupal 6
    • Content Types
      • You can select if this block should show only when the user is viewing a particular content type - like a Web Page or a Web Form

 

Managing blocks created by Menu or Views

Drupal views can create listings in the form of blocks. Listings like recent News items, Events list etc.

Also when you create a new menu as described in the menus section, it will be listed as a block.

Such blocks need to be placed in the appropriate regions.

  1. If Drupal 6: Go to Site building -> Blocks 
    If Drupal 7: Go to Structure -> Blocks
  2. You will see the list of all the blocks that you already have along with the Blocks that Views and Menus have created. You can move these around within regions and in between regions as well.
  3. If Drupal 6: You will have the following Regions
    • Content will place the Block in the middle portion like pages
    • Promobox will place the Block in the promobox area at the banner image
    • Left Sidebar will place the block on the left hand menu region
    • Right Sidebar will place the block in the right hand sidebar region 
    • Top Content will place the Block in the middle portion like pages but above the Page content

    If Drupal 7: You will have the following Regions

    • Content will place the Block in the middle portion like pages
    • Branding will place the Block in the promobox area at the banner image
    • Sidebar First will place the block on the left hand menu region
    • Sidebar Second will place the block in the right hand sidebar region 
  4. Identify the Block using its description.
  5. Move it suitable regions and/or to re-order within a region. Typically blocks created by Menus are moved to the menu section (left sidebar or sidebar first regions)
  6. Click on the Save Blocks button at the bottom of the screen.
